A Legacy of Play

Dear folks,

NOW…TRANSITIONS, REFLECTIONS and GRATITUDE
After 50 years of training in child and youth development work it’s time to get off the road and continue to enjoy hikes, travel, music, gardening, friends, community service (helping those in need), family, being grandpa… And LIFE!

Dr. Michaelis holds a cut-out arrow pointing upwards
A woman stands in one box of a grid-patterned mat while people watch

I was blessed these last 20 years to work with my student, friend and colleague Ezra Holland who died tragically in 2020. He is missed on so many levels. Over the years individually and collectively we presented over 2000 keynotes and workshops around the United States (in 27+ states) and in Western Europe.

One of the most memorable highlights for me was having the privilege to Keynote the National School-Age Care Alliance conference before 3000 professionals in Salt Lake City in 2003. For more detail about my background, interests and work please see the International Play and Playground Encyclopedia (
www.pgpedia.com). In recent years I was honored by having three entries in this prestigious resource:

  1. An expanded profile of Bill Michaelis

  2. An expanded explication of each chapter of The Leaders Handbook by Michaelis and O’connell, and

  3. An expanded explication of each chapter of Playful Teaching Practices by Michaelis and Holland….

And just last year the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester New York (www.museumofplay.org) agreed to take and house my entire professional library This is the only collection based museum in the world devoted solely to play. My contributions include hundreds of books, DVDs , old board games, teaching and workshop strategies, articles, PowerPoints, YouTube and other electronic resources, slides, quotes, cartoons, spinoff play organizations, manuals, international materials etc. etc.… And the most comprehensive history of the New games movement, the New Games Foundation And New Games in general. These will be available in the future to access for play scholars and practitioners.

NOW WHAT?
HOW CAN WE HELP? MOVING FORWARD?

As we emerge from the challenges of the last years …..what we offer is more needed than ever…..

Even though I’m off the road I still want to utilize my years of experience, my knowledge, my resources and my contacts to continue to HELP carry out Children Together’s mission…. To SERVE and MAKE A DIFFERENCE. The three main ways that we will do this is

  1. Consulting (training, programs, leadership, events etc.)

  2. Resource recommendations (people, books, materials etc.) and

  3. Making our books and DVDs available for purchase and/or downloading

The books and DVDs will be available on YouTube, directly from the publisher, or by emailing me (if you want your own copies). If you want multiple copies for your staff I may be able to get an author’s discount from the publisher.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE ****

ALL profits (after expenses) from consulting, resource sharing, sales and/or royalties from Michaelis/Holland materials will go to Ezra‘s kids and child/youth development nonprofit programs. NO monies will go to Bill Michaelis

One does not stop playing because one grows “old” … one grows “old” because one stops playing.

- George Bernard Shaw

Who have we worked with?

We have presented to almost every type of organization that serves children, youth, adults and families including schools and human services, youth development and recreation organizations in more than 27 states and overseas… non profits, corporate and public child agencies and the widest range of professional conferences and businesses. We've been successful in urban, rural and suburban areas with big agencies and smaller ones, with line staff, parents and management of all different cultures in the private, public and non profit sectors. We are among the best in the world at what we did.
